Azamara Journey

Azamara Journey began life in 2000 as R Six, the sixth of eight nearly identical vessels in Renaissance Cruises' ambitious 'R-class' fleet, all built at the Chantiers de l'Atlantique yard in Saint-Nazaire, France. Renaissance conceived the R-class as an intimate alternative to the era's growing megaships: mid-sized ships of roughly 30,000 gross tons carrying under 700 guests in a refined, understated style. The concept was promising, but Renaissance Cruises was heavily leveraged, and the travel downturn following the September 11, 2001 attacks pushed the line into bankruptcy late that year. Its ships were seized by creditors and scattered across the industry.

R Six passed through a period of layup and charter, operating under Spanish line Pullmantur Cruises as Blue Star and later Blue Dream. In 2007 Royal Caribbean Group acquired the vessel for its newly created upmarket brand, Azamara, and after refurbishment she debuted in 2008 as Azamara Journey. Alongside sister ship Azamara Quest, she became a founding member of the fleet and helped define Azamara's identity: a boutique, 'destination-immersion' experience emphasizing longer port stays, overnights, and late departures, wrapped in a relaxed country-club-casual atmosphere.

Carrying roughly 690 guests at double occupancy across 355 staterooms, Journey offers a scale that allows access to smaller ports the megaships cannot reach. She received a comprehensive multi-million-dollar refurbishment in 2016 that refreshed staterooms, dining venues, and public spaces, reinforcing the premium positioning.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Journey was laid up in Glasgow from June 2020 until departing in August 2021. In 2021 Royal Caribbean sold the Azamara brand to private-equity firm Sycamore Partners, under whose ownership the ship continues to sail globe-spanning itineraries. Malta-flagged and registered in Valletta, Azamara Journey remains in active service as a core member of the four-ship Azamara fleet.
