Celebrity Edge was conceived as a clean-sheet break from the industry's habit of stretching existing hull designs, and Royal Caribbean Group ordered two Edge-class vessels from STX France (Chantiers de l'Atlantique) at Saint-Nazaire in December 2014, each carrying a roughly US$1 billion price tag. Celebrity's president Lisa Lutoff-Perlo had championed a ship designed 'outward,' turning passengers toward the sea rather than inward toward atriums, and the brand kept the naval architecture under wraps for years, teasing it as 'Project Edge.' Steel was cut on 21 November 2016, the keel laid on 21 June 2017, and the hull floated out on 23 January 2018, emerging as a 130,818-GT, 306-metre ship for 2,918 guests and nearly 1,400 crew across fifteen decks.
Delivered on 31 October 2018, Edge introduced a suite of features that genuinely reset expectations for the premium segment. The signature innovation was the Magic Carpet, a bright-orange, tennis-court-sized cantilevered platform suspended off the starboard side that rides up and down the hull on rails; depending on its height it serves as a specialty restaurant, an open-air bar, an extension of the pool deck, or, at its lowest position, a tender embarkation platform. Equally consequential were the Infinite Verandas, staterooms in which the balcony is folded into the cabin itself, with bi-fold windows that lower at the touch of a button to turn the whole living space into an open-air veranda, dramatically expanding usable indoor room. The superstructure was shifted inward to widen private outdoor space, and a parabolic bow was engineered to cut drag and fuel burn.
The christening became one of the more meaningful ceremonies in modern cruising. On 4 December 2018, Nobel Peace Prize laureate and education activist Malala Yousafzai served as godmother, chosen to reflect Celebrity's public commitment to gender equality (the line had also made headlines with an all-female bridge crew); Malala broke with tradition by not smashing champagne against the hull. The maiden voyage departed on 9 December 2018.
Since entering service, Celebrity Edge has homeported at Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale for Caribbean seasons, crossed to the Mediterranean for European summers, and in the 2023-2024 period ranged as far as Alaska and Australia and New Zealand. In 2021 it earned a footnote in pandemic history as the first cruise ship to sail from a U.S. port after the CDC's lengthy no-sail order, departing Fort Lauderdale in June 2021. The ship spawned three near-sisters (Apex, Beyond, and Ascent), and the Edge-class formula of Magic Carpets and Infinite Verandas has defined Celebrity's identity ever since. Celebrity Edge remains in active service with Celebrity Cruises.
