Freedom of the Seas is the lead ship of Royal Caribbean International's Freedom class, a trio of vessels that stretched and refined the successful Voyager platform into something still larger and more ambitious. Built by Aker Yards at Turku, Finland, at a cost of around US$800 million, she entered service in 2006 and claimed the title of the largest passenger ship in the world at her debut, measuring roughly 154,000 gross tons and 339 metres in length and carrying well over 3,600 guests across fifteen decks.
Freedom preserved and enlarged the innovations that defined the Voyager class, the four-deck Royal Promenade, the ice-skating rink, and the rock-climbing wall, while adding a headline first for the cruise industry: the FlowRider, a self-contained surf simulator on the aft deck that generated a standing wave for bodyboarding and stand-up surfing. The feature became an instant signature of the brand and appeared on many subsequent ships. Cantilevered whirlpools extending out over the sea and a sprawling pool deck reinforced the ship's identity as a floating resort built around active fun.
The ship was christened by Katherine L. Calder, and she is registered at Nassau in the Bahamas with the call sign C6UZ7.
In 2020 Freedom of the Seas underwent a major amplification that added new attractions, including waterslides and refreshed dining and entertainment venues, keeping her competitive with newer tonnage. Throughout her career she has been a workhorse of the Caribbean and Bahamas trade, and in recent seasons she has homeported at Miami, running Caribbean and Bahamas cruises that include calls at Royal Caribbean's Perfect Day at CocoCay. Freedom of the Seas remains in active service, the ship that once again pushed the boundary of scale and gave cruising one of its most enduring attractions in the FlowRider.
